small pieces
Last August, I decided to make at least one small piece a day - a very small piece – 4” x 6”, or 3” x 4” or 4” x 4”. I now have a lot of them - they are dear to my heart because they helped me through a tough time.
It surprises me how much time some of the little pieces demand. Is this paper right? Is this stitch enough? What color should the thread be? Is the size right? My best little pieces seem to fit themselves together on my work table. It’s almost as if they find their partners themselves.
I have tubs and tubs of collage paper – failed paintings, remnants from the paper that protects my painting table (I love this paper), botanically dyed papers, and some papers I have made just for the purpose of collage. So many papers waiting for their turn.
So many little pieces. It’s like they want their time in the sun. I am not that interested in selling my art work. It takes so much time and is so different from making it. But I think it’s time. So I have signed up for square and plan to add a gallery section to this website. In the meantime, if you would like to purchase one of these small pieces, please just email me at info@robertawagner.com and we’ll sort out the logistics. The pieces come in 9” x 12”, 12” x 16” or 12” x 12” black, gold, or silver frames depending on the piece. They are all $100 and include shipping in the continental US and tax. If you don’t see a small piece here you like, check out my instagram feed and see if you like one posted there (I am having technical difficulties and the Instagram logo is not showing on the links below but it is the icon next to the Pinterest icon above.)
I want you to know that making these pieces has been my salvation during this tough year of grieving the loss of Bruce and recovering from cancer. I hope they will impart the quiet contemplation and joy I found in making them. As my health returns (I am in 100% remission from the lymphoma), I am ready to make bigger pieces again. They are so different to make - more expansive. I’ll always make the little pieces, though. They are liberating. A little like doing Julia Cameron’s morning pages.
